PORTUGAL - BASIC FACTS

Portugal, officially called The Portuguese Republic.

The country is located in south-western Europe on the Iberian Peninsula (Spain, Portugal, Andorra and Gibraltar).

Portugal is boarded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by Spain to the north and east. The Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira are also part of Portugal.

Continental Portugal is split in two by its main river, the Tagus. The highest point of Portugal is Mount Pico (2 351 above the sea level).

MALTA - BASIC FACTS

The Maltese islands lie in the center of the Mediterranean, 93km south of Sicily and 300km north of Libya. The archipelago is made up of the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino, plus the tiny uninhabited islets of Cominotto in the north and Filfla, about 5km off the southern coast. Together the islands make up a mere 316sq km. Malta, the largest, is only 27km at its longest point from northwest to southeast, and 14.5km at its widest point, from west to east. The geography of Malta is dominated by water.

CYPRUS - BASIC FACTS

Name: Cyprus (Greek: Κύπρος, Kýpros;Turkish: Kıbrıs), officially the Republic of Cyprus

’Cyprus’ has an uncertain etymology. Some suggest it comes from Cupressus sempervirens - Greek for the Mediterranean cypress tree. Others feel it stems from aes Cyprium, "metal of Cyprus", later shortened to Cuprum.

SLOVAKIA - BASIC FACTS

The Slovak landscape is noted primarily for its mountainous nature, with the Carpathian Mountains extending across most of the northern half of the country. Amongst these mountain ranges are the high peaks of the Tatry. To the north, close to the Polish border, are the High Tatry which are a popular skiing destination and home to many scenic lakes and valleys as well as the highest point in Slovakia, the Gerlachovský štít at 2,655 meters (8,711 ft), and the country’s highly symbolic mountain Kriváň.
